NADIR I

April 4, 2017by Information CommitteeNo Comments
~ Interviews with the students of LUNA ~

The Information Committee has done quite some work this year. It is finally time to post the interviews with the wonderful members of the union that have been carried out during the year. Every week we will post an interview with a member of LUNA that will tell you a bit about what they do for the union. The material has been gathered by the members of the committee, Sebastian Wolsing and Isa Bengzon.

A long time ago, LUNA had a student magazine called Nadir, and so to honour the legacy of our former predecessors, we have decided to name these updates Nadir!

First up is the previous chairperson of the Gender and Equality Committee (JoL), Hanna Thosteman, that will give us a brief description of what it was like to be chairperson and what they have achieved during the year 2016/17.

“As the chairperson of this fantastic committee, I must say the past year has been outstanding. We have managed to execute the biggest event in the history of the committee, together with Medicinska Föreningen and Teknologkåren. We invited the “conversational activist” and lecturer Navid Modiri to talk to our students about integration, fear and stepping outside one’s comfort zone. Thanks to the ambitious and hardworking volunteers, the evening we planned for a year was a great success and much appreciated among the students. The committee has grown from an almost unknown part of LUNA to become a visible asset for all members, and we want to keep working with discrimination and gender issues so that all students can feel safe and accepted.”

You can contact the Information Committee at [email protected] and the JoL Committee chairperson at [email protected]. If you want to find out more about life as an active member of the union, you are always welcome to stop by the union office or simply browse our webpage. You can contact the union via this form (you can be anonymous) or by e-mail at [email protected].

A survey of student psychosocial health

The Environment, health, and safety committee (HMS) is carrying out a survey of student health at the Faculty of Science. Psychosocial health has become an increasingly noted matter and is included in not only the scope of the student organisations of Lund but also the university centrally. Make sure to take the opportunity to make your opinion heard.

Help the union getting a better understanding of issues to work with and improve in the future by answering a few questions. You will find the committee campaigning for the survey during the upcoming week. Updates will be found on Facebook.

Your voice matters.

International Women’s Day

March 8, 2017by President1 Comment

Today is March 8th and the annual International Women’s Day.

Gender equality and equal opportunities (sv: jämställdhet och lika villkor) is an always current topic, especially at the Faculty of Science. Not only because we happen to be one of the singlegendered* (sv: enkönade) faculties at the university but also because gender issues in science is a fascinating and complex subject.

The student union is working at both towards the faculty and university, and within the union, bringing forth student opinions in the matter. Gender and equality matters are handled mainly by the Gender & Equality Committee which organises student representation, arranges relevant events, and is open for taking on student issues that may arise. The committee is currently arranging so-called ‘JoL-afton’ evenings and have started a process for a major event in 2018.

“1.4 The regulations of the Discrimination Act on combating discrimination on the grounds of sex, ethnicity, religion or other belief, or sexual orientation apply at Lund University, as well as for discrimination on the grounds of age or transgender identity.”

~ List of Rights, p. 4; 1 Study environment

The university is definitely working in the right direction. The Faculty of Science is currently working on projects fighting subconscious biases in recruitment and investigating the causes behind the unequal gender distribution in the field of natural sciences.

On June 1st the faculty will arrange a panel discussion on gender and equality with the newly elected honorary doctor Londa Schiebinger, the deannof the faculty, JoL-representatives, and a student from LUNA.

So look positively on the future and be a part of changing the university world towards the better.

*80-100 % of professors of one gender, for N-fac. see p. 8 in the annual report

Text by Einar Elén, spokesperson of the Gender and Equality Committee and Ida Lunga, president of LUNA 2016/17.
